1917- World War Winner

01/15/2020

1917 (2020) was directed Sam Mendes and stars Dean Charles Chapman and George Mackay as two soldiers fighting in World War 1. They are given a mission to sneak into Germany territory to deliver a message to their fellow soldiers that they are heading into a trap. I want to start off by saying that this movie is a technical masterpiece. The movie is supposed to look like a one shot take the entire time. Even though there were clear breaks in the action, it still was beyond impressive. Because of this, the movie has a constant element of suspense that is rarely broken. The movie is not as graphic as war movies of the past, but when those moments happen, they are shocking, realistic and heartbreaking. There were many moments throughout the film where I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen due to how intense these moments were. The acting was also phenomenal throughout. I loved seeing these actors always on their toes because of the camera. The two main characters played off of each other beautifully. I also loved the surprise appearance of Benedict Cumberbatch's character. He added a level of realism and gravity to the scenes he was in. The only problems I had with the film was the pacing at points. I found myself loosing track of the story at the beginning of act three before it picked back up again. 1917 was technical brilliance and it deserves all the awards that it's getting. I enjoyed the film and I recommend it to everyone who hasn't seen it yet.
