Antebellum- The Past Is Never Dead

05/06/2021

Antebellum (2020) was directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz and stars Janelle Monae as an author who finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality where time bends. She must find the fix to things before the future is affected. I fist have to start off by saying that I saw the reviews for this film when it first came out last year and it really pushed me away from watching it then. I now see what they were talking about. I do give my honest opinion here, so here it is. The movie is not very good. It is under the horror genre but there are no jump-scares or real suspense to be seen. There are instances of very disturbing images due to the subject matter which the film does well but they are never built upon throughout the film. I found myself wanting more suspense to the point where I was even looking for them more. The movie just ended up feeling dull and the only saving grace this film has to offer is Janelle Monaes portrayal of her character Eden. Her character is acted beautifully with moments that genuinely had me feeling like I was in her head with her. I also have to say that the film makers struggled with what image they wanted to have here. I liked the moments where they switch between time periods, but this would have been much better if the trailer didn't spoilt these things. They had a bunch of good ideas on how to make things played out, but they ended up falling flat. This leads to the ending and their twist being bland. This movie could have been great with a better cast and a tighter script. I can see this movie being remade years down the line, so hopefully this idea is done right someday.
