Barbarian- The Weirdest Movie of 2022

Barbarian (2022) was directed by Zach Cregger and stars Georgina Campbell as Tess, a girl who is renting out a an Airbnb for a business trip. After finding out the evil that lives in the house, her and the people she is there with is in for a horrifying night. This was marketed as the "scariest horror movie in a while" and while it wasn't, it was definitely an original idea. The movie had a very suspenseful first half but there was a major tonal shift that really caught me off guard. I didn't hate it, but it really deterred the story. It was probably the most bold choice that I have seen in a horror film. It was so distinct that my dad actually turned over to me and asked if we were watching the same movie. Justin Longs character stole the show for me. His mannerisms and line deliveries really added a sense of comedy that I was not expecting. His scene when he finds the basement is possibly one of the best examples of dark humor in a film. The monster on the other hand was poorly handled. Without giving anything major away, with the monsters circumstances, it shouldn't have been able to do most of the things it was doing. It felt cheap and really ruined the ending. The monster would have been totally memorable if it was grounded in realism and treated with some sort of care. The monster being so crazy really made sense with how over the top comedic the rest of the movie is. Speaking of endings, this movie ended on a bad note. I sat there was just felt underwhelmed. This movie reminds me of last years Malignant (2021) but it was a lot more enjoyable to watch. I'd recommend giving this one a watch whenever it comes out on digital.
