Chaos Walking- Mind Reading Misstep

Chaos Walking (2021) was directed by Doug Liman and stars Tom Holland as Todd, a boy living on a distant plant. In his community consisting on only men, they are able to read each others minds. On one fateful day, a space ship crashes and Viola, (played by Daisy Ridley) is its only survivor. In the midst of Todds community finding her, they are shocked to not only see a person from another world, but a woman. This movies cast was stellar. After taking a look at the films IMDB page, I was beyond excited to see what this cast could do together. Sadly, there isn't much to really enjoy here. The film is based off of a novel written by Patrick Ness. With a sci-fi world revolved around the idea that almost everyone has their every thought projected out for everyone to see, the idea fell flat. I found that the world could have been explored a lot more. They never truly explained why everyones thoughts are shown and how they can talk telepathically. I did love the cinematography and the art design though. There was a mix of futuristic, yet country settings that I thought looked amazing together. Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley had good chemistry about 75% of the time. Seeing as they are our two leading actors, this lead to moments of awkward and meaningless dialogue. This movie felt like it had a really hard time condensing a book into a two hour feature film. The movie really felt like it wanted to set up a series of movies, but failed to even make the landing for the first one.
