Encanto- Amazing Score/Basic Plot

Encanto (2021) was directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush with the music done by Lin Manuel Miranda. The story follows the Madrigal family. They are a family who were all given special abilities in their childhood, everyone except Maribel. Once the secrets of the family start to appear, Maribel finally gets a chance to understand what is really going on behind the scenes. When coming into this film, I was ready to experience something very refreshing and new, besides the music, I was very disappointed with the film. I knew everything that was going to happen and found myself only paying attention during the musical sections. Not one character besides Bruno, (we don't talk about him) was generic and forgettable. Now onto the good. As usual, the animation is top notch. I even found myself being "stunned" with how gorgeous some of the movie was. I also didn't mind the voice acting. No one stood out, but there really wasn't a bad performance. The music is the reason why I am giving this film a higher score. Standouts like "We don't talk about Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" are phenomenal. I found myself dancing around and singing with the other people I was watching it with. Encanto at the end of the day felt like a way to get out more great Lin Manuel Miranda music without putting a great story around it first. The film is passable, but I won't be watching it again anytime soon.
