Evil Dead (2013)- Gore Galore

10/31/2022

Evil Dead (2013) was directed by Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy as Mia, a girl who is taken to a cabin in the middle of the woods by her friends to help with her withdrawals. Once there, the group discovers a basement in the cabin holding a book that hold spells to summon evil itself. Once the spell is read aloud, they must discover how to survive. This movie is a great modern adaptation of the Evil Dead films of the past. It also happens to be one of the goriest films I have ever seen. I don't want to get into too much detail, but some scenes had me looking away. The cast really helped with this because each of them acted like any normal person would in those crazy situations. I also really appreciated the atmosphere and sound design of the film. It made just a plain cabin in the forest seem haunting. I have to give a shoutout to our leading lady of the film, Jane Levy. She was absolutely wonderful as Mia. She has to conquer not only her complex human form, but her "Deadite" counterpart. Her relationships with her friends and the way she portrayed withdrawal were captivating and a nice change from other "final girls". Now this movie isn't without its faults. It does follow a lot of the same horror tropes that haunt the genre. A lot of characters have same sounding dialogue and the jump scares are not well placed. Aside from that, I believe that if you are in the mood for a scary, gory and atmospheric film, you have found the right one with Evil Dead (2013). Happy Halloween to all of my viewers!
