Free Guy- "E For Enjoyable"
Free Guy (2021) was directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Reynolds as Blue Shirt Guy. He is an NPC in a video game world called Free City. When Blue Shirt Guy gains access to gaming glasses, he finds his true meaning in life. This movie is a video game fans dream. It is jam packed with fun references to pop culture and movies. The film is also very funny. There were multiple moments that had me grinning and chuckling from what was going on. Ryan Reynolds also doesn't act like Deadpool in this film which was a nice change of pace for him. He was accompanied by Jodie Comer. She is Blue Shirt Guys sidekick in the film and shares a major point in the plot. I won't spoil anything but she is trying to get back what Antoine (Taika Waititi) stole from her years ago. Huge props to Taika Waititi for bringing his sub-par character to life with the material he was given. The movie is also very visually impressive at times. The CGI that makes up this video game world is very realistic to what gamers would see in titles released today. I can also appreciate the moments where we see the faces behind some of the people playing the game. One scene in particular at the bank had me laughing out loud with what was going on. I also guess that the film wanted to just throw every IP they had at you in the climax of the film. This lead to a lot of cheers and screams from the audience. Now with that being said, there were a couple negatives that I have to touch on. The film does drag massively around forty minutes in. I found myself checking the time and trying to really pay attention. The stuff outside of the video game world was lackluster as well. I kept thinking about when they would just get back to the game world. All in all, this film is a lot of fun for fans of video games and movies. It has a lot of laughs and action to keep you entertained for its runtime. I definitely recommend you give this one a watch.
