Hacksaw Ridge- Mel Gibson Masterpiece

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) was directed by Mel Gibson and stars Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss, a man who joins the army to become a medic, but wont kill anyone. After being sent into a battle of certain death, he decides to stay behind enemy lines to save as many of his fellow soldiers as he can. I can happily say that this is the best war movie since Saving Private Ryan. This film is gritty, violent, well acted and very well written. Andrew Garfield puts out one of the best performances of his career and he is accompanied by a very surprising performance from Vince Vaughn. Going into the film, I saw his name in the cast and didn't think he could handle such a role. To my surprise, he is not only the second best actor in the film, but a role I will remember for a very long time. Speaking of the action, I was surprised to see how much violence they got away with in the film. Even though some images were shocking and disturbing, it was made for the audience to understand the terrible situation these soldiers were in. Once they get up on that ridge, all hell breaks loose. Just seeing the fear in these soldiers eyes is something I will remember for years to come. One thing I wish was done better though was the pacing in the beginning of the film. It took a little for Desmond's story to come full circle. Once the middle of the film picks up, it is smooth sailing to the finish. I totally recommend you give this one a watch. It is for sure in my top three war films of all time.
