Hustlers- Hustle with a lot of heart

09/13/2019

Hustlers (2019) was directed by Lorene Scafaria and stars Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu as two dancers who drug their clients and steal their money. After getting to far into the hole, their lives turn upside down as they face the reality of their situation. I want to start off by saying that this movie has so much heart. From the conversations that these characters have with each other to the situations that they go through, I cared for them. Jennifer Lopez does a fantastic job as Ramona, the leader of the group. She plays the character well as she switches from sweet and caring, to emotionless and evil. Constance Wu was a great surprise here. Her performance felt very grounded and real throughout. Aside from Cardi B being felt like a forced cameo, there was one other celebrity that felt very out of place. I suggest you watch the film to find out what I mean. One problem I had with the film was the pacing at the end. There was a moment where the screen cut to black and went silent. It was so out of nowhere that I was ready to leave. The cuts from present to the past also felt a little sudden and it really took me out of the film. I do highly recommend this film. It was a very gritty and realistic look into the dirty and scary business. I'm happy to say that this movie captures the feeling and environment perfectly.
