In The Heights- La película musical más caliente

In The Heights (2021) was directed by Jon M. Chu and is adapted from the Broadway musical by Lin Manuel Miranda. The story follows a neighborhood in Washington Heights NYC. The block is in the middle of a heat wave as one of its residents hits the lottery. Getting this type of money can get anyone out of the bad situation, so who is getting the 96 G's? I'm a Musical Theatre major in real life and I grew up with this musical. I've even performed numbers from it in school. I have come to really love the musical so it was a shame that I didn't enjoy this adaptation as much. Yes the music and the choreography was phenomenal, but the scenes that connected them in between felt unnatural and forced. Big shoutout to Anthony Ramos for being the standout of the film. Not only was his portrayal of Usnavi funny and original but it felt true as well. I also really appreciate how well done the dance numbers were. They were all flashy but not too much in your face. This film gets me excited for the wave of movie musicals coming out at the end of this year. I.E (Dear Evan Hansen and West Side Story). All in all, the movie did a fine job at adapting the musical to the big screen. With a lot of tweaking to the scenes in between numbers, I think this could have rivled movies such as The Greatest Showman and La La Land. For now though, If you are a musical theatre performer or a fan of the material, go ahead and watch this one. If not, just give this one a pass.
