Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City- An Unnecessary Evil

11/26/2021

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) was directed by Johannes Roberts and stars Robbie Amell and Kaya Scodelario as Chris and Claire Redfield. As the Raccoon City Outbreak takes over, they have to find a way to make it  out alive. I am a massive fan of the Resident Evil games and boy was I insanely disappointed by this film. Not only did this film feel like a "B-Movie", but it felt lazy. The characters were poorly written and the script was even worse. They combined plots from the first two video games into a ninety minute movie. I also hated how the characters talked. There was a curse word in every sentence and made the whole film feel cheap. My favorite character in the games, Leon, was also done terribly here. Avan Jogia did what he could, but the character didn't feel like its game counterpart at all. I have to give credit where credit was due though. The creatures and zombies looked great. My favorite scene was the introduction of the Licker. The monster in the game was terrifying and they captured that same essence here. There were also shots of the Mansion from the first game and the R.P.D police station from the second game that look identical to its source material. It gave me small senses of excitement in a less than stellar film. Resident Evil has never really done well in the box office and this film failed as well. Video Game movies continue to disappoint and this movie doesn't give me hope for the genres future.
