Spiral from the Book of Saw- Spiraled out of control

05/14/2021

Spiral: from the Book of Saw (2021) was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and stars Chris Rock as Detective Zeke as he tries to find out why the Jigsaw copycat killer is going after cops. Once the whole force is on lockdown after multiple attacks, Zeke feels like he has no one left to trust. Coming from a fan of the Saw series, I was a little disappointed in the film. Yes there is a bunch of suspense and gore, but I feel like the older movies did it better. There were many moments in the film where I thought to myself, "That definitely could have been done better." That aside, major props to Chris Rock and him taking on such a serious role. I have a lot of respect for actors who step out of their comfort zone and try something new. Other actors that I think did a great job in the film were Samuel L. Jacksons role as Zeke's father and Max Minghella's role of Zeke's partner. Both were stand outs in a rather lack luster cast. I also have to make a note of the pacing in the beginning of the film. After starting off with a strong trap, the movie becomes a stand still with a bunch of characters waiting for something to happen. I found myself just trying to figure out who the killer is and why they would do it instead of staying invested in the film. That being said, I think that there is enjoyment to be found. The movie has flaws but it is a fun time at points. If you're interested in figuring out a decent mystery and look for some decent traps, this movie is for you.
