Star Wars Movies Ranked!

12/10/2019

In honor of the Rise of Skywalker being released soon, I decided to put together a ranking of the numbered Star Wars films. These are my personal opinion so feel free to put together your own list!

Number 8- Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones

Now I don't personally hate any Star Wars film but this film is by far the weakest. Even a major fight between droid and jedi, Count Dooku and Yoda and Obi Wan and Jango Fett can save the film from the terrible writing. The entire love story from the film is beyond awkward and laughable at best. Hayden Christensen's performance felt dry compared to his counter part played by Ewan McGregor. Christopher Lee also puts in a great performance as Count Dooku. The film is definitely watchable but will be last on my list for sure.

My Rating- 5.5/10

Number 7- Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

This movie was the first Star Wars film since the original trilogy ended back in 1983. I honestly think that the movie had such mixed reviews because of how much hype it had surrounding it. I personally didn't have a lot of problems with the film. Jar Jar Binks may have been the worst Star Wars character introduced until someone was introduced later on. The pacing of the film was also a bit off with way too much of the movie stuck on Tatoooine. Liam Neeson puts in a near flawless performance as Qui-Gon Jinn. The last half hour of this film is pretty entertaining as well. I though Ray Parks Darth Maul was menacing as well. The film had to set up a huge universe and it did its job decently.

My Rating- 6/10

Number 6- Star Wars Episode 6- Return of the Jedi

I know this is a low placement but let me explain. Every movie from this point on in my opinion is amazing. There were just some elements of this film that I did not care for. The major cast returns as the original trilogy comes to an end. I feel like this movie was way to predictable to rank higher than the other films. The action was great and the conflict in Vaders heart is the best part of the film. I also loved the opening hour of the film. The whole Jabbas Palace/Barge scenes are great. The Ewoks did feel like a cheap way to sell kids toys, but this was a solid ending to the first three films.

My Rating- 7.5/10

Number 5- Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith

I loved how dark this film was. It wasn't afraid to go there with all of the intense scenes. I remember seeing this film in theaters when I was little and being very upset with everything going on with these characters I love. Anakins slow decent into the dark side was cut a little short with the death of Mace Windu. That whole scene felt weird but his love for Padmé was what finally drove him to go there. The whole order 66 scene was a movie stealer with how heartbreaking it was. The movie also had tons of actions and great villains. Series newcomer General Grievous was a scene stealer with his four arms. Emperor Palpatine was also fully formed in the film and was played to a tee by Ian McDiarmid. The final battle between Anakin and Obi-wan was also breathtaking. Loved the film and it ended the somewhat disappointing prequel trilogy with a bang.

My Rating- 8/10

Number 4- Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi may be the most decisive movie in the franchise but I praise it for its bold choices. Most of the film is spent running away from the first order which felt kind of boring, but the scenes with Rey training with Luke were amazing. I also loved the force connections between Kylo Ren and Rey. Mark Hamill reprises his role as Luke Skywalker and plays him perfectly. I loved seeing his struggle to train Rey after the failure of Ben Solo. The throne room scene with Snoke is my personal favorite scenes in the whole franchise due to how intense it is. The ending battle on Crait was also stunning with the beautiful terrain. The whole scene on Cantobite was a time waster and really out of place. It made the movie feel way too long. This movie also introduced us to the worst character of the franchise, Rose. I literally hated every scene she is in because she was so annoying. Her motives were fine but the way she was portrayed was far from good. A good lead up film to the eventual trilogy ender, The Rise of Skywalker.

My Rating- 9.5/10

Number 3- Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens

This was the first Star Wars movie back in ten years and the hype for the film was greater then anything I have seen before. We were introduced to a brand new cast lead by Rey, Finn and Poe played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Issac. These three are probably the strongest core of characters since Luke, Leia, and Han. The big bad of the film is Kylo Ren, played amazingly by Adam Driver. The main criticism of the film is that it is basically a copy of A New Hope but I feel like this is what the series needed. It was like a return to form done right. I loved BB-8 as well. He is by far the best droid since R2-D2 and C3PO. I was throughly entertained throughout the film and Im glad that it set the Sequel trilogy off right.

My Rating- 9.5/10

Number 2- Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope

This was the movie to start it all and this was one way to start it. The movie is near perfect from beginning to end with a great cast to go along the way. Darth Vader makes his first appearance here and is probably the best movie villain of all time. Star Wars A New Hope was the start of the phrase "Summer Blockbuster" for a reason. It is an action packed film filled with heart and it gave us characters to grow and love for many years to come.

My Rating- 9.75/10

Number 1- Star Wars Episode 5- Empire Strikes Back

You all knew this was coming. One of the few movies to actually be better than the original. Empire Strikes Back gave audiences at the time, the best twist in all of Cinema with the line, "No, I am your father." This was also the first Star Wars movie where the bad guys win! We don't know what will happen to our heroes and we are left with them barley clinging on to hope. The scenes on Hoth are amazing and Bespin is breathtaking. Yoda was also introduced in this film and is one of the best puppets in cinema today. The love between Leia and Han also blossoms in the film and the lines, "I love you", "I know" are heartbreaking. This movie is my favorite movie of all time and I never see a film ever taking its number one spot.

My Rating- 10/10
