Stillwater- Family Secrets

08/03/2021

Stillwater (2021) was directed by Tom McCarthy and stars Matt Damon as Bill Baker. He is a father who travels to France to get his daughter out of prison for a crime she did not commit. As more of the truth is discovered, Bill must decide if he is truly in the right or the wrong. I did not expect much from this movie as it has seemed to have flown under the radar. This movie was absolutley brilliant. From the writing, directing and cinematography, I was in awe of the entire film. I was totally invested from start to finish. Matt Damon does an outstanding job as our main character. He was not only incredibly funny, but his acting felt real. His emotions were on full display as he deals with trying to solve a murder case on his own. Without any spoilers, the movie takes a lot of twists and turns that made the two hour run time even better. It's a slow burn character piece that hits all it's beats correctly. Each set piece and shot felt needed. This film really proves that having the right locations really matter. When things come to an end, I really felt for the character. My anxiety built as the arc of the film hits its peak. I also felt extremely attached to his relationship with the little girl he takes under his wing in the film. As the movie came to an end, I sat in disbelief. Such a dark horse film. Completely recommend for movie fans who love a film that has every element of cinematography done perfectly.
