The Black Phone- Killer Call

06/26/2022

The Black Phone (2022) was directed by Scott Derrickson and stars Ethan Hawke as the "Grabber". We follow the story of Finney, played by Mason Thames, who gets abducted and put into the Grabbers basement. Once down there, the previous victims use a broken phone to talk to Fin to get him out of there alive. This was the best horror movie of the year. That being said, this movie didn't have a lot of competition. Even though this movie had its flaws, I found myself actually getting scared a couple times. I really enjoyed the child actors in the film. I actually believe that they are the best child actors since the kids in It (2017). Even though Ethan Hawke wasn't totally scary, I still found moments in his performance to enjoy. The backstories were also set up very well to the point where I wish we stuck with the characters before the kidnapping scene. There is also some pretty shocking gore throughout that even involves a kid. I found myself on the edge of the seat for a good majority of the time but when I wasn't, the film dragged heavily. This movie gave me my scare fix this year and I am excited to see the future of Blumhouse if this is the quality of movies that they are going to make.
