The Guilty- Phone Call Chaos

The Guilty (2021) was directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a police detective that was demoted to a 911 operator. One day at the job, he receives a call from a woman who has been abducted. Once the call from the woman drops, he does everything in his power to make sure she is safe. This movie was recently added to Netflix and was getting a lot of attention. The film was shot during the early stages of the pandemic last year so it had a lot of limitations. Not only was this movie shot in eleven days but, the director was even forced to quarantine and direct from a trailer down the street. I thought this would lead to problems, but I found this movie and its acting very well done. Jake Gyllenhaal is slowly becoming one of my favorite actors. His performance in this role is breathe-taking. It was really grounded in the world he is living in and his acting had me on the edge of my seat. The film mainly takes place in the 911 call center, but it really doesn't need to go anywhere else. The script is so well done that there isn't a need for big set pieces. This is a psychological character piece that deals with a lot of emotion. The ending was also shocking as the film makes you believe one thing before flipping it all on its head. I was shocked and taken back by what I was hearing. This feeling is something very rare to feel during a film. You really have to want to put the time in to care for these characters and the payoff is well worth it. This movie is the better version of The Call (2013). If you enjoy suspenseful crime thrillers, give this one a watch.
