The Lost City- Non Fiction Failure

The Lost City (2022) was directed by Aaron and Adam Nee. The film stars Sandra Bullock as a Non-Fictional author who has lost her spark for writing about historical sites and now writes romance novels. Once someone finds out that the romance novels actually are somewhat real, Loraine is kidnapped and forced to find out where the treasure is that she is talking about in her books. Her cover model Dash, (played by Channing Tatum) takes it upon himself to rescue her from the island before it is destroyed by a volcanic eruption. This movies trailer had me so excited. The plot of this film is so unique and the cast was pretty solid, but this movie didn't do it for me. There were some points that were smart, but then the movie decided to just ruin it with awful writing. I felt like the movie and its writing was begging you to laugh. The movie was so unfunny that I found myself groaning at the jokes. Channing Tatum gave a decent performance here. I feel like he was the films saving grace. The way he portrays a dumb hunk to a tee but his costars gave him nothing to work with. The villain of the film played by Daniel Radcliffe was fine but at the end of the day, forgettable. There was also a small cameo from Brad Pitt that felt insanely forced and ridiculous. There was some very nice shots and action sequences with a nice car stunt about halfway through. I didn't expect to see that in a comedy movie so I was pleasantly surprised. My final point is the romance subplot throughout the film. Bullock and Tatum have a decent connection, but their relationship felt forced and unnatural. I understand that at the end of the day, this movie wasn't looking to be a masterpiece, but it could have been smarter and a lot funnier. A total disappointment and one of the worst movies of the year.
