The Many Saints of Newark- Tony Soprano Tribute

10/01/2021

The Many Saints of Newark (2021) was directed by Alan Taylor and takes a deep dive into the young life of Anthony Soprano, (played by Michael Gandolfini). During this time, rival gangs begin to rise up and challenge the Moltisanti crime family. Dickie Motisanti, (played by Alessandro Nivola ), struggles to keep ahold of her personal and professional life, which eventually takes a toll on his nephew, Tony Soprano. I adored the art style and time period in the film. The 1960's era was a very interesting setting due to everything that was going on at the time. There was also a lot of shocking scenes throughout that made the gang life back then seem even more intimidating. Even though all of this was great, the film didn't really stand out from the other films in the same genre. You have seen all of these themes before done in different ways. All of the acting in the film is great, but there weren't any standout performances. I did appreciate how they developed Tony though. Even though what he did was wrong, the film did try to make you sympathize with him and understand his motives. The action, though few and far between, was done well and the relationships between characters was also well developed. With better pacing and a story that doesn't follow the normal gang/crime format, this movie could have been something special. Sadly, even though this film was a bland representation of the genre.
