Truth or Dare- I dare you not to laugh

04/15/2018

Truth or Dare (2018) was directed by Jeff Wadlow and stars Lucy Hale as a college student named Olivia. She is forced on a spring break vacation to Mexico by her friends to relax. Once there, they take their party to an abandoned church to have fun in seclusion. Once they are all settled in, they ask their new friend, Sam, played by Landon Liborion, to come up with a game to play. He suggests the game truth or dare and when they start to play, whatever evil spirits are in the church attach themselves to the game. The kids now get asked truth or dare and if they don't comply, they die. The movie itself had an awesome premise and with Blumhouse backing them, I maybe thought that the movie would be smart. Boy was I wrong. The movie was filled with nothing but stupid decisions and awful dialogue between friends. There was not a single good performance in the movie. All of the actors seemed like they didn't know what was going on. Another thing that really bothered me was how smart some of the truth or dares could have been. For instance, there was a character that wasn't ready to come out to his father and the game made him do it. These are the relevant issues that the movie could have helped, but they went for the simple things like kill your friends and chug some alcohol. The ending of the film is beyond frustrating. The whole movie makes us believe that Olivia is a changed person and that she will do whatever for the greater good but she makes the most selfish decision in cinema history and the movie ended off of that. I am beyond disappointed with this film because it could have been so interesting, yet it falls victim to the modern horror tropes and falls flat.
