Upgrade- Dark Horse Movie of 2018

Upgrade (2018) was directed by Leigh Whannell and stars Logan Marshall Green as a man who is brutally attacked and left for dead. The men that did this to him killed his wife and left him paralyzed. He is then offered a second chance at life. He gets a stem chip placed into his neck that allows him to walk again. There is a catch though. Stem can speak to him and take over whenever it wants. Grey then decides to take Stem and go after the people who killed his wife. This movie was a surprise for me. I went into the theatre not knowing anything about the film and I was pleasantly surprised by how phenomenal it was. From the set pieces to the action, I loved everything about the film. I also thought that the banter between Stem and Grey was brilliant. The film was the perfect run time as well. There wasn't a single moment where i was bored or taken out of the action. The action on Logan Marshall Greens part was breathtaking. The first hour of the film before he gets the chip is heartbreaking. You can really see how hard it is for him to continue going on in life with what he just experienced. The movie does falter with a couple of weird lines and situations but these are minor flaws in a near perfect machine. I also have to commend the film for being brutally dark. The ending was so out of left field that I genuily wanted to go to the next showing to sit though that moment alone. What a great surprise this film was. You will definitely see it on my top movies of the year.
